Travertine is a natural-looking stone that can be made to fit into any decor scheme, and it&#8217;s durable enough to survive the test of years and even decades of wear. Travertine pavers are also porous, which helps them to readily absorb water and makes them a safety-conscious option for those considering a DIY travertine installation by the pool. If you&#8217;re looking for the perfect paver for your patio or walkway, travertine may just be the answer. If you have already decided to renovate your outdoor space using travertine, one of the decisions you&#8217;ll have to make is whether or not to seal your pavers. &#8220;Sealing&#8221; is the practice of applying a protective coating that can help you avoid staining and discoloration. you&#8217;ll find this advice relevant for most types of stone &#8211; not just Travertine. you\u2019ll remember that Travertine is a natural and porous stone. As such, it needs to be sealed to protect its natural beauty (not to mention your investment) so it doesn&#8217;t absorb liquids \u2013 think red wine \u2013 and become permanently stained.<\/p>\n<p>The most obvious benefit of sealing your travertine pavers is that they&#8217;ll have extra protection against staining, sun-bleaching and other forms of surface damage.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>When should a sealer be applied to travertine tile?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Sealing Travertine is very easy and should be done during installation and periodically thereafter \u2013 approximately every three to five years, depending on usage and traffic, as well as the products used to clean your surfaces after use. Harsh chemicals, for example, can prematurely wear away the sealer.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How do you apply a sealer to travertine?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A sealer can be applied to Travertine using a sponge, brush, paint pad, cotton towel or sprayer. Any sealer that has not been absorbed by the stone in 5 minutes should be removed using an absorbent paper or micro-fiber towel. Allow at least thirty minutes of drying time between applications if two or more coats are applied. After the final coat, wait two to three hours. Test the sealer by putting water droplets on the stone; if you notice no water being absorbed, the Travertine has been successfully sealed! Although a sealed floor can be walked on two hours after applying the sealer, you should typically plan on twenty-four hours to completely cure the surface.
